HEALTHY DRINKS RECIPE: A FLASK OF LOVE

From the Kitchen of The Good Food Angel

------------------------------------

A nice hot beverage can cheer up a miserable winter's day. I’m not keen on giving my daughter too much dairy produce in her lunchbox, but on cold mid-winter mornings, when I have to send her out to school in the rain and the dark, I like to surprise her with a flask of hot cocoa and something delicious to nibble. I prefer to use cocoa than use ready-made drinking chocolate, which always contains far too much sugar for the amount of cocoa it contains, so you have to use heaps of it to get a decent taste. By using cocoa you can control the amount of sugar you use and get a purer chocolate flavour. Instead of marshmallows, which are empty calories, I send a homemade cookie, or a coconut bar, which is nutritious as well as being sweet and delicious with chocolate.

INGREDIENTS

Organic cocoa

organic milk

raw cane sugar

a few squares of chocolate

a little cream (whipped or unwhipped)

serve with cookies or coconut bars.

METHOD

In a mug, mix together as much cocoa as you need with the sugar and a little cold milk and stir it well working it up into a froth. On a medium hob, heat enough milk in a saucepan and remove from heat just before it comes to the boil. Pour into the mug with the cocoa in it and mix well. Pour into cup/thermos. Drop in the chocolate squares and pour in a little cream. Serve with cookies or coconut bars.

TIP: Remind your child to give the thermos a shake before opening (to redistribute the cocoa).

RECIPE: HOMEMADE LEMONADE

From the Kitchen of The Good Food Angel

-----------------------------------------

This nostalgic taste of long ago is great for the last day of term or other special occasions. Substitute this for bought fizzy products, which contain huge amounts of sugar and other nasty stuff.

INGREDIENTS:

Lemons

Lime

Raw cane sugar

Sparkling water

METHOD

Combine sugar with a little water in a saucepan, over a low heat, until it dissolves into a syrup. Allow to cool. Remove pips and juice the lemons and lime and add to syrup. Add sparkling water.
